The final drag hunt took place at Blackpool for this seasons Open Non Winners. An annual event hosted by the City Association is eagerly awaited by those of us who are not good enough to rattle the weekly drags, but have a good chance of landing this because of the champion hounds not allowed to run! So at 4pm 24 hounds of mixed grade set off to run a 26 minute course. I honestly don't know who led what roads, but I did see the finish which at one stage could have been any hounds.
When they showed a few fields out, they were running at a fast pace, with the first two hounds having a very competitive race between themselves. They were chopping and changing between 1st & 2nd until they ran out of view. In the finishing field, they showed in the right hand corner running to the line. The first two hounds, Kieran Lynchs 'Laddie' (snr maiden) of Douglas and Simons 'Hi Ya' (pup) of Fairhill were kneck in kneck with a few lengths on the group behind them. I thought 'Hi Ya' led them in by a head, but paused at the judges, letting 'Laddie' get his nose across the tape 1st for an elated Kieran Lynch. Simons 'Hi Ya' took the runner up prize and Norma Mahonys 'Ruby' battled it to the line taking the 3rd ticket from IHT 'Echo' who took 4th place.
Results:
1st Laddie, Douglas
2nd Hi Ya, Fairhill
3rd Ruby, Northern United
4th Echo, IHT
5th Newtown Raven, Griffin United
6th Saturday Surprise, fairhill
24 ran, 26mins 35 secs.
