The 2011 draghunting season finally opened for eagerly awaiting trainers last Saturday, where Clogheen hosted the 1st puppy drag of 2011 and set a fine example for all clubs who follow. The 33 hounds set off and to be fair to these pups only 1 returned to the start, leaving the remaining 32 to fend for the first 6 tickets passed the finishing line. After 16 minutes the honours went to Bernie Ralls 'Mossie' of Mayfield, who showed great determination to hold off Darren O Callaghans 'Sophies Choice' of Douglas, taking the 2nd ticket whilst Denise & Leslie Kepples 'Son of Magic' of Mayfield crossed the line 3rd just ahead of Martina McGraths 'Dawston Dancer' of Northern Hunt who snatched the 4th ticket.
On Sunday, the seniors met at Clogheen for another outstanding clean course, leaving no room for errors at this meet. Nothing goes off without a glitch though....... as we anxiously awaited the puller (WADEY) to show at the start............after several minutes ............... and numerous smokes................. the prodigal puller returned !!!!! Elated trainers lined up their senior hounds, again, and this time they ran through the bog turning at Na Piarsaghs and onwards passed Frankies for Blarney, where after 2 road crossings would show again 5 fields out from the finishing line, att the Haunted House. The eventual placed hounds were in contention all through this course, and the fabulous clear view of the finish showed the leading hound ahead by 6 lengths setting the pace for his followers. Once the call went up, some dogs never loose their tricks. Two lengths before the line it seemed 'Mahonys Choice' had it, but, true to his title, Denise Kepples 'Magic Choice' magically leapt over the line to snatch the 1st prize from his kennel mate 'Mahonys Choice' followed tightly by Andrew O Callaghans 'Midday Magic' of Douglas, seriously, if there was half a length between these 3 , it was a lot.
The senior maidens followed with a finishing display from Pat Mahonys 'Maggie May' who, on hearing the call, left a gap of at least 15 lengths between her and her kennel mate 'Simply Red' crossing the line for 2nd. She wasn't alone as Stan O Herlihys 'In Me Way' crossed the line closely to take 3rd. So Mayfield, after winning all 3 drags, remember 'Barney's golden rule - SHARING IS CARING- so whatever ye're feeding the dogs, we want some !!!
